City’s metro project is going through a critical phase as Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has turned down the proposal of being a part of city’s technical committee for the metro project. The DMRC had prepared the detailed project for the technical committee and also suggested appropriate system for the city.
According to the DMRC officials, “the city needs to modify the bus rapid transit system (BRTS) so that it remains complementary and not a ‘competition’ to the metro.” Following a meeting of PMC and PCMC officials with traffic experts, suggestions and guidance was sought from the DMRC on various issues pertaining to the city metro project.
According to the PMC and traffic experts, three-member technical committee should be formed in which DMRC, traffic experts and committee will have a member each. The PMC will appoint chairperson for the same committee. The other issues like overlapping of the BRTS and proposed metro railway were discussed in the same meeting.
However, SD Sharma, GM /consultant, DMRC, while responding to the committees’ suggestions, said,
The DMRC would not like to have its member on the committee as the detailed project report (DPR) has been prepared by us.
The issue of city’s metro project is being discussed by experts, politicians expressing different views.
Talking about the overlapping of the two routes, the DMRC said,
The metro corridors have been planned on roads where there is no BRTS track at present. Therefore, the BRTS routes already planned by the PMC and the PCMC may need slight modifications so that the BRTS routes work as complementary to the metro and not in competition
While replying to the PMC’s suggestions that running additional trains and laying additional lines between Shivajinagar and PCMC areas will be cheaper than the contemplated metro railway system, the DMRC said,
Existing railway lines are already saturated and hence running additional trains on them may not be possible. Adding a railway track alongside the existing line is not recommended as it will not benefit the public at large due to its poor accessibility. For this reason, a metro line is recommended between the PCMC areas and Shivajinagar and further to Swargate.
Gen SCN Jatar (Retd), a member of the committee that made certain suggestions to the DMRC, said,
There are certain inherent problems in the implementation of the metro project. The metro project has not been coordinated with other mass transit systems such as the BRTS. The DMRC does not know the geography of Pune and hence we are not satisfied with their reply

I do love the way you have presented this issue and it really does offer me personally some fodder for consideration.
