The year comes to an end, and with New Year’s Eve around the corner, the traffic branch of Pune Police has already begun to crack down on drunk driving and other driving offences. In the last few days, more than 361 people have been detained for being inebriated while driving, and cases have also been filed against another 284 people for rash driving and violation of traffic rules. Those held for drunk driving have been produced in court.
“In the year 2010, the police department suspended licenses of around 622 persons for drunk driving, and another 1,191 licenses were confiscated of those involved in rash driving. Furthermore, we have also submitted proposals for the suspension of 6,225 driving licenses related to various offences to the regional transport offices in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Responding to our proposals, the RTOs have suspended 3,650 licenses so far,” said deputy commissioner of police Manoj Patil (traffic).
To check drunk driving on New Year’s Eve, the traffic police have formed 50 special squads. The police have further told that they have decided to take strict action against triple-seat two wheeler riders and rash drivers on December 31, 2010. They will also act stringently against those playing loud music in their cars or driving vehicles without exhaust pipes.
“New Year is the time to have fun and stay happy. But Puneites must respect the law, act responsibly and enjoy within limits. The police department will make sure that anyone breaking the law gets arrested immediately and safety and security in the city is maintained at all costs,” Patil went on to say.
“I think the police acting strictly against people involved in drunk driving is a very justified and good move. Anyone who is found acting irresponsibly and posing a threat to the society during New Year’s Eve, should be booked immediately and sent to jail,” said Minal Dixit, a resident of Vimannagar.
