Dussehra symbolizes the victory of good over evil. On this day, Lord Rama killed Ravana, the demon. It is also celebrated as Vijayadashami by many Hindus. On this day, Goddess Durga killed demon Mahishasur. It is celebrated all over India. Many people think it as an auspicious day to start a new venture.
On the occasion of Dusshera, people make huge effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarana and Meghnath. They also enact ‘Ramlila’ and at the end of Ramlila burn these effigies. The burning of these effigies signifies the destruction of the evil within us.
On the occasion of Dussehra, people inaugurate their offices or buy properties after they worship Aparajita Devi during the ‘muhurta’ (or auspicious time) for the occasion. On Thursday, the ‘Shubh Muhurta’ for this was between 2:22 pm to 3:09 pm. On the occasion of Dussehra people worship their tools. People wash their homes and vehicles and decorate theory houses and vehicles with marigold garlands.
In many parts of Pune, people built the effigies of Ravana and witnessed it burning at the fare organized in the city. The Bengali women participated in the ‘sindhur khela’, where the married women apply vermillion to each other and wish each other a long and happy married life.
The shops in the city were crowded as people bought white goods and launched new ventures as those who want to invest in property wait for this auspicious day.
The entrance of shops across the city looked beautiful with ornate ‘torans’ made of flowers. One could see beautiful rangolis at the doorsteps of the houses and shops. In the evening, people went to each others’ houses wish prosperity by giving them leaves of Shami tree.
The jewelry shops in the city were also quite crowded on Thursday, as the gold prices dipped. Although people usually buy gold on the occasion of Dhanteras prior to Dipawali, many people invested in the yellow metal following a dip in the prices of gold. Vastupal Ranka of Ranka Jewelers said, “Generally, people don’t buy gold after the Ganesh festival until Navratri begins. This year was an exception. The gold business picked up even before Navratri began because of the drastic drop in gold prices. As a result, the demand has exceeded supply.”
The college students in the city also indulged in buying gold. The cost of gold for 10 grams of gold was Rs. 18,000 last year. It shot up to Rs 28,000 this year. So buying this metal is an investment that is truly profitable these days.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface.
