The election commission has started a voter registration drive in the district of Pune which is an important initiative with respect to the future elections. Special government officials have been appointed for this endeavor. These officials will be deployed at various election booths to register new voters and rectify the mistakes in the information of existing voters.
Apurva Wankhede, deputy district election officer was talking to the reporters on Friday. She said, “The district administration has released the latest list of voters at the respective polling booths from November 15. The administration is expecting people to verify the information in the list. If there are some changes to be made, officials have been deployed in all the 21 assembly segments of the district, who will verify the documents and changes would be made. Photographs of voters will be taken wherever necessary.”
There are 64,46,757 voters in Pune District at present. There are a few discrepancies found in the election voting cards and the voter registration drive will certainly help overcome these flaws.
Wankhede said, “The drive will continue till November 30 and the registration facility will be available on Sundays as well. Any person, completing 18 years of age by January 1, 2011, is eligible to get registered. The district-level drive is a part of state level initiative undertaken by state election commission.”
“All the electoral registration offices have been well equipped with computers, software and broadband connection that would facilitate upgrading the information of existing as well as new voters. There is a new software called ‘the electoral management system’ which has been installed for speeding up the procedure. This software will compile all the data and produce required information like duplication of names, total number of voters in the segment, etc.,” Wankhede said. Till now, the entire procedure was manual work and hence was too slow and leaving too much scope for errors.
The election commission has already sent their officials in different housing societies for updating the voters’ list. Wankhede said, “Article 79-A of Maharashtra Co-operative Act 1960 says that housing societies should provide the information of their members to the election officials. Verification at other locations will be done by organising gram sabhas’, mohalla’ committees and local self-governing bodies.”
