To commemorate the 50th year of the creation of the state of Maharashtra, an eclectic art exhibition has been organized featuring more than 160 artists. Master of colors, Picasso believed that painting is just another way to keep a diary. A similar art diary is being showcased at the Sahyadri Lalit Kala Pratishthan, Pune, till April 26, 2011 to mark the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of the formation of the state of Maharashtra. Art lovers can witness on its varied and vivid pages paintings based on Japan’s recent earthquake, a life-like sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi, the season of spring, and other abstract works. The exhibition will showcase works of noted painters and sculptors like Raja Ravi Varma, J D Gondhalekar, Ganpatrao Mahtre, S L Haldankar, S M Pandit, Ram Sutar, Baburao Painter, Raghuvir Trimulkar and many more, an ensemble of more than 160 creative geniuses to celebrate the landmark year.
This exhibition, by displaying the works of so many brilliant artists, attempts to offer with each painting and sculpture an insight into different shades and tones of the world. The exhibition will entice your imagination to reflect, stir, pause, and think. “The ratio of colors depicts a lot about a painting and helps to depict the personality through it,” opines Murali Lahoti, who has been working as a freelance painter for the last 50 years. Each and every painting displayed in the exhibition wears a different theme. The moment you enter the venue, a three-tone painting with just red, grey and black will immediately cat your eyes, so will Ram Sutar’s beautiful sculpture of Gandhi. Sutar, a gold medalist student from the 1949 batch of the J J School of Arts, is also the creator of the largest sculpture of the Mahatma, stationed at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Sutar also sculpted 21-feet-high statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Balewadi. When asked what he thinks about art, Sutar replies, “Art is the passion of my life. But most of the young minds are running behind money and materials. I sometimes wish that there were more people pursuing their passion for arts and contributing to the field.”
It is nothing short of an experience in itself to sense the hidden meanings behind the different works of art. Sculptor B R Khedkar, who has been sculpting since he was 10 years of age, has showcased his sculpture of artist J D Gondhalekar at the exhibition. He is currently working on a huge 9.5 feet tall statue of the great Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which he wants to gift it to the Indian Armed Forces. His wish is that the statue be put up on the Indo-China border to infuse a feeling of valor in the soldiers with the “never give up” Maratha spirit of fighting.
“This is a great initiative and I am looking forward to visit the exhibition. It is not everyday when you get the opportunity to see the works of so many renowned artists. Art is a beautiful field and it is sad that very few youngsters are actually adhering to this medium of expression. Imagine a world without painting, poems, or movies? Everything will be so mundane. I think every parent should encourage their children to get involved in some kind of art-related activity,”
says Shikha Mehra, a resident of Kothrud, Pune.

The other day, while I was at work, my sister stole my iphone and tested to see if it can survive a 40 foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My iPad is now destroyed and she has 83 views. I know this is totally off topic but I had to share it with someone!
