In a positive response to the call of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for coming forward to help the people in Leh who are trying to start anew after a terrible cloudburst spelt a doom in the area taking a heavy toll of 170 lives, the emergency kits for water management developed in Pune are being sent there. These kits will be utilized in the cloudburst stricken areas for the water treatment, storage and distribution.
The kit will be moved to the concerned areas with the help of The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The installation of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) at ground zero for water management, storage and distribution is pretty easy. Two experienced engineers have been specially trained for the smooth operation of the kit and are going to accompany the units to look into the troubleshooting programs in case of any malfunctioning of the unit.
One of the developers of the unit, Mr. Rahul Pathak from Aquaplus Disaster Management was talking to the correspondents yesterday. He accented the importance of providing clean water especially after any disaster. After the natural calamities like earthquake, cyclone or a cloudburst, water in the affected area gets contaminated quickly and leads to many health hazards. Mr. Pathak was happy to note that their team could develop a kit to overcome this problem.
As Mr. Pathak told the kit is the outcome of a two year thorough research and a deep study. A team comprising 10 researchers which included a group of British students was working on the project. The University of Surrey, UK also contributed to the research and development process. Moreover, some of the engineers were registered for Disaster Relief on behalf of some NGOs in Pune. Thus the kit is the upshot of a diligent team work.
Sand filtration and Chlorination are the two important procedures in the water purification. The kit performs these functions rapidly. When the Kosi flood created havoc earlier this year, the kit was used in the disaster management program. After inspecting the performance of the unit, some modifications were made later for more effective results.
According to Mr. Pathak, one kit can suffice to fulfill the need of drinking water of 800 families and can give 40,000 litres of water in 10 hours. Mr. Pathak said that the team would develop more such units to meet the demand of pure drinking water in the disaster affected areas.
The kit will be reaching Leh today.
The entire unit has been dismantled into six different parts. It will be assembled and installed in Leh today afternoon. Mr. Alok Avasthy, Commandant of The National Disaster Response Force, Pune gave this information to the correspondents.
