The Details:
The garden is maintained by the Agri-Horticultural Society of Western India. The Society has been looking after the garden since 1880.It was Sir John Malcolm who took an initiative in the foundation of the society. The making of the garden was an earnest attempt of preserving flora of the region.
The land where the Empress Garden stands today was a property owned by Sardar Vitthalrao Purandare. In the year 1838, the British Government took hold of the land. Further in 1845 the property went into the hands of Sir Charles Napier. During his ownership the garden was called “Garden of Dr.Don”. Later the garden was renamed as the Empress Garden in honor of Queen Victoria when she became the ‘Empress of India’. The garden used to be the favorite place of relaxation for the British officers and hence is also known as the ‘Soldiers’ Garden’
Geographical Details:
The garden is spread on a sprawling area of 39 acres and a number of rare species of plants. This is the reason why from the botanical point of view the Empress Garden is of utmost importance.
Botanical Park
It can more be called as a botanical park offering its place to a number of varieties of fruit bearing trees that are classified under the tropical type of vegetation. The chief of these fruit bearing trees include mangoes and tamarind. Many researchers in the field of botany and the students of environmental science often plan a trip to the Empress Garden. A rich learning experience in the fresh air of the garden is amazing.
Flower Beds and Small Zoo:
Apart from this, beautiful flower beds catch the eye of the visitors at the outset. Especially at the advent of Spring the beauty of these flower beds is matchless.
A small zoo, too, attracts the visitors. Children love watching different pranks of the animals in the zoo.
A Beautiful Place:
The garden is very much popular among the people of Pune as a perfect spot for a one-day trip. The eye soothing beauty of the greenery in the garden always attracts people. You can’t imagine that a tranquil and serene place like this can exist in the otherwise busy city like Pune.
