Ganpati mandals in the city that violated the directives of Supreme Court (SC) on noise pollution and provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, during the immersion process have been booked by the Pune Police.
Noise levels were checked by the police authorities during the immersion process and on the basis of the findings; cases were lodged against the erring mandals.
“Complaints were registered against those mandals that kept playing loud music and kept violating noise level norms after midnight,” said Prabhat Kumar, Additional commissioner of police (South region).
City cops have filed 59 cases against mandals in zone-I that includes old city areas like Deccan Gymkhana, Warje and Kothrud. In zone-II, comprising areas such as Camp and Satara Road, among others, around 62 cases were lodged. Furthermore, more than 18 cases were filed in zone-III and -IV, which includes areas like Pimpri Chinchwad, Hinjewadi, and Khadki, Yerawada, Vishrantwadi respectively.
The SC directive strictly prohibits use of loudspeakers or any kind of musical instrument after midnight. Furthermore, Provisions of the Environment Protection Act does not allow the noise level to go beyond a certain point when measured on decibel sound metres. Police commissioner Meeran Bonwankar had already warned in a press conference earlier that police would take harsh action against Ganpati mandals that violate rules during the immersion procession. Altercations were also reported between the police officers and mandal workers when the former prevented the workers from playing loud music after midnight during the procession.
