In an important development in the context of the city traffic, in the last couple of days the traffic police department has taken action against as many as 335 vehicles having the fancy number plates. The branch has thus launched a new campaign against such number plates as they are hard to identify quickly. The drive will continue till January 01, 2011. The traffic police department has appealed to the citizens of Pune to report instances of fancy number plates along with the photographs on Facebook account of the department.
The central motor vehicle rules don’t allow the number plates to be in the regional languages. The registration mark must be in English. The category of vehicle such as two-wheeler, three-wheeler and so on decides the size of the number plate.
According to a traffic branch official, a section of the public has been using fancy number plates in regional languages. He said, “Many a time, the designs of the numerals are such that they resemble popular words in some language. Such numbers are not easy to identify by the people or the police. This breaches the very objective of having the registration number for the vehicle.”
The traffic police department opened their facebook account last month and the officials appealed to the citizens to report instances of vehicles parked on cycle tracks and footpaths. The department has been receiving loads of complaints regularly as regard the incidents of traffic violations. Many citizens have found a nice medium to send their suggestions for improving city traffic at different spots. The police have also opened a discussion on the charges for parking vehicles at some of the malls, multiplexes and other commercial establishments.
