According to the golden words stated by India’s first PM, Jawaharlal Nehru, Pune is the ‘Oxford of the East’. There are ample numbers of colleges, education institutes, universities, but few of them have gained immense importance and respect enhancing the education in Pune. Fergusson College in Pune is one of the few educational institutions to bring Pune’s name on the global map of education. In India, it is always counted among the top 10 colleges. Similarly, it is also counted as one of the top colleges in Pune in Arts and Science streams.
Situated in the city of Pune, Fergusson College was established in 1885 by the DES (Deccan Education Society). At that time, it was a privately governed college in India. It is named after Sir James Fergusson, the Governor of Bombay, who donated a princely sum of Rs 1,200. Since 1948, the college has been affiliated to the University of Pune and is the oldest, coming under its jurisdiction.
Fergusson College is well known for its close involvement with Indian Politics. The founders of this institute were amongst the pioneers of the INC (Indian National Congress), as well as Hindu Nationalism, and the Indian Socialist Movement. Basically DES was formed in 1884 with Shri V. S. Apte, Shri. G. G. Agarkar, Shri V. B. Kelkar, Shri M. S. Gole, and Shri. N. K. Dharap, (B. A.) joining them. At present DES run 43 institutes in Maharashtra. Fergusson is one of them. The courses offered, are in Arts and Science streams, at the end of which students may appear for the Higher Secondary State Certificate examination.

The college has two sections mainly; the Junior Wing and the senior wing for students. It offers Bachelor’s Degrees in 29 disciplines and Master’s Degrees in 16 disciplines. The college also offers doctoral and vocational programs in different areas. All the teachers staff is skilled and proficient in the respective areas of knowledge.
On the campus front, F. C. is enriched by its artistic infrastructure of the main building, Bai Jerabai Wadia library, N M Wadia amphitheatre, Kimaya open- air theatre, botanical gardens, 55 well set laboratories, 6 blocks for hostel, gymkhana and large playground.
Bai Jerabai Wadia Library:
This library was built in 1929 by renowned industrialists Sir Cusrow Wadia and Sir Ness Wadia in memory of their mother. The Main Library on the ground floor has more than 300,000 books and research journals. It provides additional services to students, teachers, scholars, research workers and senior citizens including scholars from abroad. The library also possesses a collection of statues and posters, devoted to great national leaders and educationalists. The library building was expanded first in 1955, with government grants and then in 1982 with grants from the Central Government.
Students’ activities:
NCC and NSS:
NCC training in F.C. College was initiated in 1921. There are two units of NCC in Fergusson College- Army wing and Navy wing. On the other hand, the NSS Unit of Fergusson College was started in 1975 with about 50 students. The activities of the NSS include helping students understand community, their relation with community, National Integration, and social problems.
Events
Fergusson College is host to a number of academic and extracurricular events. The Cultural Committee organizes events such as ‘Muktachhanda’, ‘Oorja’ which showcases performances, and cultural programs of a non-competitive and competitive respectively with healthy participation of students in the organization.
Even the NSS organizes its fest “Jallosh”. The Foreign Students’ Association organizes “Panorama” which again is very happening. Overall, the month of January is the time to see Fergusson College in its most festive and vibrant mood.
Periodicals
The photography department, with help from current and ex students, brings out an e-magazine, Fergzine.
Admissions:
Admissions procedure is same for all the courses in the college that start after the University exams for the particular subject gets over. Usually the admissions start in the month of June. For updates on admissions you can visit the official website of the college.

F.C. College is situated on F. C. Road, near famous hotels Vaishali and Roopali. Another landmark is the Pune’s Times of India office, which is diagonally opposite to Fergusson College.
