‘Fibre to the home’ (FTTH) services are all set to come to the city of Pune; thanks to The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. Now the internet users can get the broadband services at even faster speed because of the ‘gigabit-capable passive optical network’ (GPON). The GPON is undergoing various technical tests for introduction and once they are done, the network will be ready for the customers’ use. The service is expected to be available within a month.
A BSNL official was talking to the reporters yesterday. He said, “The GPON services will be provided through optical fiber cables, which will have high speed downloading and uploading capacity. Hence, customers will get additional internet speed as compared with the existing broadband speeds.
The proposed GPON will be provided to the customers through fiber cables instead of copper cables which are used in the existing broadband network. The new system will provide the customers high speed downloading as well as high speed uploading facilities.
The service will be equipped with a dedicated modem with four parts. Two of the ports will enable surfing high speed internet facilities along with IP TV and VOIP services.
As per the information provided by the BSNL official, there are as many as 100 exchanges in Pune. Arrangements are being made to make every exchange provide FTTH service through GPON. The new localities in the city will be exempted from this service for the time being.
The BSNL enjoys the considerable number of 1.20 lakh customers in the city. The company wants to seek permission from the PMC and the PCMC for digging the roads so that the service would be provided swimmingly. The BSNL wants to replace old cables with the new copper cables with an intention of providing quality services to the customers. According to the company official, the charges imposed by the civic body for digging areas are very high and the fact is turning out to be a big hindrance in the progress of the work.
