Good news for sports lovers in Pune. Even when dark clouds hovered with four rugby players from the city getting injured, still the Indian rugby squad to Guangzhou boasts of Pune dominance. With three more players entering the rugby scene, the 12-member squad now has five players from Pune. Before the four other players got injured, the number stood at six.
The four injured include former captain Avani Sabade, Shruti Marathe, Ketaki Khare, and Gayatri Salukhe. The five city players who with their hard work, skill and perseverance got into Guangzhou are Surabhi Date, Neharika Bal, Vahbiz Bharucha, Neha Pardeshi, and Annapurna Bothate. Out of them Vahbiz Bharucha and Neharika Bal are regulars in the team.
The tournament is very special for Surabhi Date for she has been selected as the captain of the team. She was surprised and happy when her coach broke the news over phone. “It’s an overwhelming feeling. I am glad that I have been chosen as the captain, but I also understand the responsibility that comes with it. I shall try my level best to win the tournament and bring glory to the country,” said Surabhi.
Debutant Annapurna Bothate, who will represent her country for the first time is equally excited and nervous. A district-level kabaddi player and weightlifter, Annapurna, switched to rugby in order to test her endurance and physical ability. A winner of Enduro in the year 2009, a 16-km endurance race that is held in Pune every year, her high fitness level and ability to stay focused in diverse situations prompted her to take up the sport. “Rugby is a sport that allows outlet of aggression with controlled contact. That is the part I like the most about the game. Everyone around me told me that I have no future in the sport as it is not as famous and lucrative as cricket, but I just love playing the sport and hence I shall keep playing it and never quit,” she said.
“It is great news that five girls from Pune have made it to the Indian rugby squad to Guangzhou. It shall definitely give more exposure to Pune as a city that promotes sports and better its image globally. I wish them all the luck and hope they return victorious,” said Kartick Karnik, a resident of Swargate.
