The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, has been in news for all the wrong reasons recently. Privatization of the institute, courses not finishing on time, lack of faculty, are some of the issues that created a lot of stir in the otherwise serene ambiance of FTII. In an effort to restore normalcy, the newly-elected members of the governing council are expected to present a detailed project report (DPR) on the up gradation of the institute within the next six weeks, and they are also working out ways in order to clear the backlog of students who are still on campus and to have the institute declared as a centre of excellence.
“Our primary concern is to get the DPR prepared within the next six weeks by a group of experts (GoE) headed by PK Nair. It is high-time that the institute be recognized as a centre of excellence and an institute of national importance. We intend to achieve this goal through an Act of Parliament, as a result of which FTII gets the dignity it deserves,” Saeed Akhtar Mirza, the newly-elected president of the FTII Society and chairman of its governing council. Mirza is also a critically-acclaimed film8maker and an alumnus of the institute, who took charge a couple of days ago.
On the issues of backlog of students, who are yet to complete their courses, and vacancies for faculty and staff, and other problems, Mirza went on to say, “We did face a lot of problems initially. However, the air has been cleared after having free-wheeling, open-ended meetings with the faculty, staff and students. Now, we can begin dialogue on matters that require all these forces to unite to achieve certain goals together. From now on, every two-and-a-half months we plan to hold governing council meetings.”
Another major concern is the correction and modification of the syllabus within a month. Academicians are of the opinion that vastness of approach is required to the training imparted to students, by going beyond the regular stream of television and film, and bringing in quintessential elements of art, history, culture, politics, among others, to make the course structure more holistic. “We intend to make education in film and television holistic by providing a broad framework of reference, which shall enable students to create or build their own artistic vision. The experts, who are part of the governing council, will also lend their expert inputs on making this possible,” Mirza added.
Rs 11.32 crore under planned budget and Rs 13.5 under non-planned budget has been granted to the institute for the year 2011-2012. The ministry of information and broadcasting has shown keen interest to support the growth of FTII, and is willing to give more money under special grants, provided demands are justified as per needs. FTII authorities have already sent a special draft to the I&B ministry proposing the declaration of the institute as a centre of excellence. “We have already sent a proposal and the ministry is considering it for approval. This recognition is important as it will enable FTII to have more staff and courses, start research and PhD programs, thereby allowing us to widen the scope of our academic activities,” Ahmed said.
On Monday early this week, highlights of the DPR were presented before the governing council which included details on issues like re-creation of abolished posts, filling up vacant posts, new architectural plan and proposed infrastructure for FTII’s Kothrud campus, building of new hostel facilities, among others.
The new vice-chairman of the governing council is the founder of SPICMACAY, Kiran Seth. Other members include Shaji Zaman, Rajiv Mehrotra, Rama Vij, Mrinal Pande, Romi Khosla, K Hariharan, Ratan Thiyyam and Subhash Sahoo, along with director general of Indian Institute of Mass Communication, director general of Doordarshan and Prashant Pathrabe, director of National Film Archive of India (NFAI).
The members of the new academic council, which will be effective from July 15, are Nandan Kudhyadi, Rajen Kothari, Neena Sabnani, Sameera Chanda, Saurabh Shukla and BP Singh.
