FTII Craving for Changes

At the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) governing council (GoE) meeting yesterday, some of the feasible recommendations were given a green signal for implementation. Among the prominent ones reconstruction of the main theatre, upgrading the FTII courses making them more relevant and clearing the backlog of students can be mentioned.

Mr. P.K. Nair, head of the GoE which came into existence last year with the aim to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the upgradation of the institute, was talking to the correspondents yesterday. He said, “We have proposed a budget of Rs 200 crore for the FTII’s upgradation. The council has approved our recommendations. We have been asked to prepare a final draft with priority recommendations in the first phase. We will send the draft to the Planning Commission by the month-end.”

A budget of Rs. 4.5 crore has been recommended by the GoE members which would be used in clearing the backlog of the FTII students. Mr. Nar said, “Around Rs 30 crore has been proposed for the reconstruction of the main theatre that will be upgraded with state-of-the-art acoustics. We’ve also requested two additional classrooms on the top floor of the television building. Also on our list of priorities will be renovation of stage number one at the FTII’s Law College Road campus and a new studio on the Kothrud campus. The new campus will also have hostel buildings.” The GoE is optimistic about getting a green signal from the Planning Commission by the month of September.

There is also a proposal to appoint veteran mentors as guides of the students and preparing contents for the foundation year which would be common to all the students for all the courses. The institute intends to move ahead with time dissolving the irrelevant contents of the courses and wants to begin new credit system for all the courses.

One of the members from the GoE said, “The foundation year will comprise modules in traditional Indian literature, social studies and exercises on usage of the body and mind to understand cinema and art. We’ve also thought of having parity in the duration of each course. We’ve suggested a centralized approach to usage of equipment – a common technical department wherein equipment required by all the departments will be used. This will allow faster availability of equipment for students’ projects and facilitate better coordination among various departments.”

The recommendations of the GoE members will be implemented in various phases. Many more meetings are to be conducted. In the next meeting the FTII governing council plans to meet the faculty and alumni and have their suggestions which would be included in the DPR. A letter has also been sent to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting demanding the reconstitution of the governing council itself with the inclusion of the staff, teachers and student members who are directly affected by the changes in the strategies of the institute.

Thanks for your write-up. I also believe laptop computers are getting to be more and more popular right now, and now tend to be the only kind of computer employed in a household. This is because at the same time potentially they are becoming more and more very affordable, their working power is growing to the point where they’re as potent as desktop computers coming from just a few in years past.

A bail bond agent, or bondsman, is any person or corporation that will act as a surety and pledge money or property as bail for the appearance of persons accused in court. Although banks, insurance companies and other similar institutions are usually the sureties on other types of contracts (for example, to bond a contractor who is under a contractual obligation to pay for the completion of a construction project) such entities are reluctant to put their depositors’ or policyholders’ funds at the kind of risk involved in posting a bail bond. Bail bond agents, on the other hand, are usually in the business to cater to criminal defendants, often securing their customers’ release in just a few hours. Bail bond agents are almost exclusively found in the United States and its former commonwealth, The Philippines. In most other countries bail is usually much less and the practice of bounty hunting is illegal.
