While the fever of the Ganesh festival is gradually taking young and the old into its fold, many Ganesh Mandals in the city are doing their best to spread the general awareness regarding the influenza H1N1 popularly known as Swine flu. In the midst of grand celebrations these mandals have not forgotten to take this as an opportunity to spread the awareness regarding the ways to combat the disease and to administer the H1N1 vaccines.
Mandals are distributing pamphlets giving all the necessary information regarding the disease to the visitors. Huge banners and hoardings explaining the symptoms of the ailment and the precautions to be taken have also been put up at many places in the city.
In a noteworthy attempt to combat the flu, Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Trust has purchased over 5,000 Nascovac Vaccines that are to be administered to students of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) schools.
While talking to the correspondents on Tuesday, Mr. Mahesh Suryawanshi said, “Students of various schools will be vaccinated at the PMC-run Mahatma Phule Prathmik Vidyalaya on September 17, 18 and 20. Eminent doctors from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) have been appointed for the campaign. They are going to administer the vaccine and we are sure this little effort of ours to fight the H1N1 virus will get a good response from the public.”
“Last year, people were not aware of the epidemic, nor were there any vaccines to fight it. Fortunately, this year, we have the means and the necessary awareness to take precautions against swine flu, and therefore we decided to use it to our advantage,” he added.
Suryawanshi told that the Dagdusheth Mandal has spent a considerable sum of 7.5 lakh. He said, “The amount left from donations had to be used for needy children, because they are most vulnerable to the influenza.”
Moreover, the mandals right from the beginning this year showed great concern about the spread of the disease in the city. Well before the Ganesh Festival, more than 1,500 pamphlets on Swine Flu were distributed among the visitors. The pamphlets dealt with the precautions to be taken to resist the spread of the disease and some dos and don’ts. Some helpline numbers too were given on the pamphlets.
Similarly vaccines against H1N1 were administered to the volunteers and their kith and kin by the Akhil Navi Peth Hathi Ganapati Mandal last week. The Mandal President Mr. Shyam Mankar said, “500 people were vaccinated. It was important because these volunteers have to work in crowded places. We had also invited doctors, who spoke at length about swine flu and the precautions needed to combat it.”
Some other Ganesh Mandals in the city too are organizing the vaccination camps at subsidized rates. For instance, the Twashta Kasar Samaj Sanstha in Kasba Peth conducted one such camp last week and vaccinated over 600 people at meager charge of Rs.50 per shot.
When contacted the mandal secretary Mr. Girish Potphodi said, “A single vaccine cost us Rs 130, but we made it available for Rs 50. Visitors can make use of this opportunity even now, but because of a fund-crunch, we would be charging the original price for each shot. Apart from this, we also put up banners on swine flu awareness in our library, Twashta Kasar Samaj Vachan Mandir. Spreading awareness about the issue was necessary, because Ganeshotsav is a time when people visit crowded places.”
The mandal has also distributed over 1 lakh pamphlets making people aware about the H1N1 virus. Mr. Bholenath Wanjle, working president of the mandal said, “We distribute these pamphlets daily among those who come to pay obeisance to the idol. These leaflets are replete with information on the flu medicines and vaccines available in the market, how one should go about purchasing them, along with numbers of doctors who can be contacted in case of an emergency or for vaccine administration.”
It’s really good to see the Ganesh mandals recognizing their role and also the reach and doing their lot in spreading the general awareness about the H1N1 influenza.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
