Thousands of devotees thronged to see a glimpse of their Lord and the ‘visarjan procession’ on Sunday. The celebrations of Anant Chaturdashi lasted for about twenty seven hours. It began around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 11 and ended around 2:00p.m on Monday, September 12.
When the ‘manache’ Ganpatis of Pune, Kasba Ganpati, Tambadi Jogeshwari, Guruji Talim, Tulsibaug and Kesari Maratha Trust Ganpati, were brought on Laxmi Road, one could not help noticing the various groups sporting saffron flags with vermillion color on their faces. Various groups showcased their talents in these processions. The various mandals chose to take their idols in elaborately decorated chariots.
The deity of Kasba Ganpati mandal was taken in a beautifully decorated palanquin. A group of women and members of the Art of Living tried to spread awareness about Anna Hazare’s anti-graft movement.
The Tambadi Jogeshwari Trust’s deity was welcomed by women dresses in elegant sarees. Many of these women mounted horse backs, while some walked with swords in hands; they spread the message of women empowerment. Some corporates also accompanied this mandal and appealed the people to keep their environment clean and green.
The deity of Guruji Taalim mandal was ornately decorated on a chariot depicting Radha and Krishna. This mandal was accompanied by members of two bands that played old songs. The students who joined this mandal chanted vande maataram and charged the procession with patriotic fervor. They also performed some amazing stunts.
The Tulsibaug Ganpati Mandal’s procession was no less spectacular that the previous ones. About three hundred members of the Swaroop Vardini group and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh demonstrated their expertise of ‘malkhambh’ traditional martial arts, ‘vetra charma’ and ‘ghoghroo-kaathi’.
The Kesari Maratha Trust’s procession began from the Tilak Road. The main attractions of this procession were the performances by the children of the Shankarrao More Vdyalaya, Children Observation Home, and Loknete Junior College from Erandwane. The made the atmosphere lively with their lezim and taal performances. They also made beautiful rangolis.
The spectators and the participants witnessed danced to the tunes of the ‘dhol tashaa’ groups. They had a lot of competition amongst each other. Amongst those who thumped their feet to the beats of these dhols was Mayor Mohansingh Rajpal at the Alka theatre chowk. He was accompanies with leaders of various leaders of political parties.
The small stall in the lanes of Laxmi Road did very good business as many visitors treated themselves with tea, snacks and wada pao. There are many road side games for those who wanted to indulge in them.
The many volunteers also participated in the procession to spread the message of Child Rights, awareness on the environmental issues and female infanticide. It gave a platform to many people to show their talents in public. Some foreigners got to see a glimpse of the culture and traditions of Maharashtra. They will go back home with fond memories of the Ganesh festival.
The policemen also must have heaved a sigh of relief after the day Anant Chaturdahsi ended peacefully. After the recent bomb blast in New Delhi, they had diligently worked to make adequate security arrangements.
