The PMC has set up a biogas plant at Model Colony in Pune to generate energy for street lights. This is a first of its kind for Pune. The biogas plant will utilize waste generated from the city to power up around 70 street lights for 7 hours daily. It will also save the Corporation around Rs. 5 Lakh.
This project kick started on Friday and has been commissioned by a city based company called Enprotech Solutions. The generation of energy will begin in December. The Bhabha Atomic Research Center has developed the bio-methanisation technique for this project.
The Model Colony BJP Corporator Jyostana Sardeshpande said, “After seeing a similar project in a Mumbai housing complex, we decided to implement the same in our ward.” Model Colony houses around 4000 properties and the garbage collected from these houses comes to around 8 tonnes. After the dry and wet garbage is segregated, the biodegradable wet garbage will be used in the plant.
The wet garbage will be further segregated at the ramp. It will be put into a crusher and then the digester. After the process is complete, we will have 2 segments- biogas and slurry- which can be used as manure, too,” Sanjay Nandre, Director, Enprotech Solutions said. “The plant will not attract any flies, mosquitoes or generate foul smell as it will be a closed plant
he added.

Interesting article. It is very unfortunate that over the last years, the travel industry has had to deal with terrorism, SARS, tsunamis, bird flu virus, swine flu, as well as first ever entire global tough economy. Through it the industry has really proven to be robust, resilient in addition to dynamic, acquiring new ways to deal with trouble. There are often fresh challenges and the opportunity to which the business must once again adapt and act in response.
