Ghoradeshwar

The city of Pune in the Indian state of Maharashtra boasts of a rich cultural heritage. It is also known as the Cultural Capital of Maharashtra. Tourist attractions galore in and around the city of Pune contribute a lot in enhancing the tourist importance of the city.

Ghoradeshwar is one of such tourist spots near Pune. It is a holy shrine of Lord Shiva. The place has remained unnoticed as compared to many other tourist attractions in and around Pune. The consummate natural beauty of the region and the Shiva Temple engraved in hard rock are what make the place a must visit spot.

Where is it located?
Ghoradeshwar is merrily accessible from Pune. It is situated on the hill top in Ghorawadi village which lies just 15 minutes away from Akurdi/ Chinchwad on Pune- Mumbai Highway. Lord Shiva residing in the temple is regarded as the patron god of the village Ghorawadi and hence the name Ghoradeshwar.

How to reach?
Reaching Ghoradeshwar is pretty easy as you can get on board the local train at the Pune Railway Station and get down at Ghoradeshwar Railway Station. Once you leave the train, it’s just a 10-15 minutes’ walk to the foothills of the temple.

If you come to Chinchwad from Pune, reaching Ghoradeshwar won’t take more than an hour.

As you reach the foothills of the Ghoradeshwar temple, you see the well built 350 odd steps to climb. The task may seem grueling at the outset; but the natural beauty of the surroundings and the cool breezes blowing make you forget all your exhaustion. If you are able to climb up these steps within 20 minutes or so, rest assured, you can safely keep the doctor at bay.

As you climb up the steps and reach the hill top, there comes the moment of consummation. You can see the Ghoradeshwar temple crafted out into hard rock of the hill. Before you enter the Shiva temple, a small shrine of Lord Hanuman catches your eye. The small idol of Lord Hanuman is pretty nice.

As you move on you see two symmetrical arches crafted in rock. This is the entrance to the Shiva temple. The entire temple is an ultimate piece of work and you just can’t help but to admire the deft hands of the workmen who built this temple. Even before you enter the temple, you find the god residing in this art work and you join the hands to bow down before this human effort.

There are a couple of well built water tanks on the top near the temple where you can wash your legs before you go to the sanctum of Lord Shiva.

As you enter in, serenity and solemnity in the sanctum fill your heart with a sense of awe. The first glimpses of Lord Shiva make one remember the entire story of the Samudramanthan when Lord Shiva drank the dangerous venom called halahal that could have destroyed the entire universe had it spread all over.

The Shiva Linga here is surrounded by a big snake model made of brass. You also find beside the Shiva Linga the Trishool and the Damru, Shiva’s favorite weapon and musical instrument. You also see hung over the Shiva Linga the abhishek patra i.e. pot containing milk that continuously drips on the Linga.

The local priest offers pooja to Lord Shiva early in the morning. He decorates the Linga with beautiful garlands and flowers. The smell of the flowers and the fragrance of the burning incense stick pervade the sanctum and add to the sanctity of the place.

From the architectural point of view, the temple is pretty simple. I must mention here one distinctive characteristic of the construction of the temple. At the beginning of the uttarayana, the sunlight falls on the Shiva Linga at the time of sunset around 06.00 P.M. It really looks amazing. Those who want to catch this beautiful sight should stay back till sunset or else come in the evening. The sight gives a call to the photographers who come here in good numbers to capture the sunlight dripping on the Shiva Linga into their camera.

Usually the place is not much crowded. But during the Hindu month of Shravan and especially on Mondays in Shravan, you find many devotees flocking here and seeking Shiva’s blessings. The divine presence of Lord Shiva can be felt in the surroundings of this temple. During the monsoon magic, the entire area is blessed with matchless natural beauty. So this is the best time to visit the temple and drink the beauty of the region with all your senses.

In short, Ghoradeshwar makes a perfect destination for a one day trip from Pune. The trip gives you utmost spiritual satisfaction along with an introduction to some matchless natural beauty.

Good food and accommodation facilities are available in Chinchwad which is an hour away from Ghoradeshwar. You can also get some refreshments in small hut like hotels in Ghorawadi.

So whenever you come to Pune, don’t forget to visit the temple of Ghoradeshwar.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
