Hot on the heels of the petrol price hike is an inevitable hike in the cost of vegetables. A city that thrives on vegetables that are brought in by road from neighboring districts like Ahmednagar, Satara, Solapur and Sangli, Pune also relies on veggies coming in from states like Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. Saturday saw the prices of petrol and diesel go up by Rs. 3.50/-, which directly affects the transportation of fresh vegetables available in the market. The vegetable market is looking at a hike of atleast 5-10% increase in rates.
Vehicles like the trucks and tempos are run not by big businesses like the Fuel Industry, but by individual owners looking to make a meager living by transporting goods. When the question turns to them to carry the slack that falls in between the farmer and the retailer, the difference in prices is not something that can be easily overlooked as it directly cuts into their earnings.
No one is ever happy with a price hike, on anything, which has left retailers, customers and these intermediaries in an unhappy state of mind. At the end of the day though, what has to be done is done. Some citizens have voiced the opinion that if the government is hell bent on raising the price of fuel, they should in-turn provide subsidies to the vendors and farmers so that the price of food stays the same.
Like clockwork the city unit of the CPM will come out in protest against the fuel price hike at Mahatma Phule Mandai today at 3:30pm.
The searing heat this summer had already led to less produce in the market already pushing the prices up. When will this constant gradual rise in prices end?
