Did America have a right to choose a Black President? Didn’t Gandhi have the right to violence? Wasn’t truth a virtue for him? Doesn’t Democracy imply the right to choose?
It’s an irony that the winner for the Nobel Peace Prize, 2009 is a gentleman named Barack Obama, the First Black President of America. There would have been no ‘Quit India Movement’ if it hadn’t been for ‘Ahimsa’. There would have been no ‘Bappu’ if it weren’t for the ever-binding virtue of truth. India would not have been a democracy, wherein 28 states, diverse cultures, customs, dialects, religions come together to make ‘one’ country. All of us! Each one has a choice, the right to choose… But, do ‘they’?
In the land of the Kamasutra, the word ‘sex’ and any of its associations, from gender to gender choice or the use of contraceptives to sexuality is generally considered taboo and invites much verbose a debate. Homosexuality is one such taboo, which has found NO voice. Even though, legalized in India, homosexuals till today are discriminated. ‘They’ refers to homosexuals, people who belong to the same society, the same state, the same country and to the same democracy that we do.
We all have our desires, our wants but it’s made no easier to fulfil because we all have our choices too. These choices are out in the open for us, but are they for them?
It’s famously believed & quoted that- Love is blind. So is it, actually? If it is, why can’t a man fall in love with a man or a woman with another? Can there not be a perfect match for an Adam; as an Adam. All of us have been made to believe that marriages are made in heaven. But then why is this holy union of two souls labelled with the parameters of gender?
The fear of losing one’s identity, the fear of not being able to face society, the fear of “coming out of the closet”, quite literally! It is quite apparent that the governments ruling on Section 377 has left society with a ‘choice’, what we however are left with is how this society’s stand on this choice, takes shape. If there are people who come out in show of solidarity and support, there are those who condemn and rebuke.
For, the Holy Bible says, ‘Love Thy Neighbour’, but do we?
