Puneites who love to toy with traffic rules, beware! In an effort to stop encroachment and improve pedestrian security, city traffic officials have decided to impose hefty fines on owners who will park their vehicles on footpaths and cycle tracks from November 20.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the traffic department, the Pune municipal Corporation (PMC) has given full authority to the traffic police to take strict action against those who illegally park their vehicles on cycle tracks and footpaths. The decision was taken by the PMC in its general body meeting held on May 20.
“The problem lies with the general tendency of people to break rules. There is a section of vehicle owners who act callous and park their vehicles on footpaths and cycle tracks even if there were enough parking spaces available. It was high-time we acted against them and so we decided to take stern action and charge hefty fines from November 20,” said Manoj Patil, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Pune.
The fine will be Rs 5,000 for heavy vehicles, Rs 2,000 for cars and jeeps and Rs 1,000 for three and two-wheelers.
“We have decided to come down hard on law breakers and shall make sure that the guilty gets punished. Our aim is to make sure that no encroachment takes place on footpaths and cycle tracks in the near future,” Patil said.
“As a resident of Pune, I can only say that the traffic scenario in the city is too bad. People park their vehicles anywhere and everywhere, creating many inconveniences for pedestrians. Now that the traffic cops have decided to come down hard on law breakers, the situation might change for good. I hope that the decision is executed properly and it helps in solving and organizing the traffic situation in Pune,” said Harsha Kulkarni, a resident of Baner.
