The heavy and incessant showers toned down the spirits of the festivities in the city this weekend to some extent and threatened to cause flood in Pune. About 68000 cusecs of water had to be released from water the Khadakwasla dam, which led to flooding of the low lying areas in the city. Many areas in the city reeled under the threat of floods.
The areas those were worst hit include Pune Cantonment, Sinhagad Road, slums in the Pimpri Chinchwad area (Sanjay Gandhi and Gautam Buddha slums), Tadiwala Road, Warje, Juna Bazaar, and Pulachi Road. The residents in these areas were asked to move to safer areas.
There were instances where many residents in Vitthalwadi had to remove the idols of Lord Ganesha to a safer place as the water entered their homes. One of the residents lamented that they had planned to immerse the idol on seventh day; but these plan were ruined as had to do it on the fifth day because their residence was flooded with water.
The flood water sweeped the decorations and their homes were in a complete mess. The idol kept by a mandal nearby said that had to shift the idol to the first floor of a nearby building as the water threatened to sweep the idol too. These people had to witness their food items being ruined because of the rain. This is a really heartwarming scene as the Ganpati festival marks the beginning of the festive season and for these people, their joy was ruined by the rains.
Many angry residents living along the Mutha River blame their loss of property to the Pune Municipal Corporation for not making the announcements of the rising water level on time. They say that they lost their valuables because they were not asked to evacuate their residence on time. All the joy of the welcoming the Lord to their homes was immersed in the flood waters.
The rains kept the huge crowds away from visiting the pandals; the number of people visiting the pandals for the darshan of their deity was comparatively less. The rains had obviously made it impossible for people to come out and enjoy themselves this weekend. The next weekend will witness the immersion of the idols. People hope that it does not rain when it is time to bid the Lord adieu.
