Pune witnessed a heavy downpour on Tuesday evening, along with strong winds that caused many trees to fall. As it started raining after 5:30 pm, it aggravated traffic jams in many parts of the city. The Indian Meteorological Department said that by 8:30 pm, about 42.4 mm of rainfall had been recorded. Many main roads in the city were clogged with water, which caused many people to return late to their homes. Many low lying areas in the city were water logged.
The fire brigade officials reported that more than 20 trees in the city fell down because of the heavy rains and strong winds, and most of these incidents were reported from Deccan, Law College Road, Baner, Dhole Patil Road and Aundh areas and it caused traffic jams in the city for more than three hours. A teenager was injured in Janwadi when a tree branch fell on her. The fire brigade officials rescued her and took her to a nearby hospital.
According to Dr. D. Sivanandan Pai, of the National Climate Center at IMD, “Monsoon may have ended in Pune, but it is still active in south India. Moreover, the heat experienced in the mornings is mixing with the moisture in the air, cause torrential downpour sin the evening… This is a type of pre-monsoon shower. As long as there humidity in the air, the city will be subject to rains.”
The moisture in the city could be an incursion from the Bay of Bengal, which could be causing humidity levels and hot weather in the city. The IMD officials said that the hot weather in the city caused rain in the city. The maximum temperature in Pune was recorded to be 33 °C., and the highest was 22.2 ° C, which is more than the normal temperature.
Besides Pune, some neighboring cities of the state also experiences rains on Tuesday evening. These cities include: Wardha, Chnadrapur, Parbhani, and Kolhapur. Apart from Pune some other cities that experienced hotter weather are: Akola, Jalgoan, Malegoen and Amravati. The IMD says that the city can experience post-monsoon showers like yesterday, for a couple of days. Rain will be accompanied by thunderstorms.
Although Kojagiri Poornima, which fell on 11th October, marks the end of the monsoon, it seems that there will be more rainfall in the city. Because of the cloudy weather on Tuesday night, the moon was hardly visible.
