Modernization and technological growth, which on one hand have proven to be of great help to the humankind, on the other have also been responsible for stealing away human lives. The Pune highway police are preparing a fresh list of accident-prone zones on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which is expected to be ready by the end of this month. “The list should get ready by this month-end. The police department regularly attempt to identify new accident-prone spots and rectify them. The new list will also be a part of the attempt,” said Superintendent of Police (Highway) Dilip Bhujbal.
“We prepare the list based on the inputs and other necessary details received from the highway police, accident survivors, voluntary organizations, and traffic engineers. The new list will include other places, other than the usual Amrutanjan Ghat and Somatne Phata area. The police would scrutinize the reasons of accidents at these spots and suggest probable measures to the concerned authorities to rectify them,” Bhujbal added.
Majority of the recent accident cases reported owed to human errors, followed by defects in vehicles, and lastly, road structures. “Considering the causes, there is an immediate need for a better and rigorous training program for drivers. There should be capsule courses, which shall not only impart driving lessons, but also provide ample knowledge and information about vehicles,” said Bhujbal.
As another precautionary measure, law enforcement should also be improved, for unless people are punished for violating traffic rules, they will keep breaking rules and eventually get used to it.
