A mob ransacked Hope Hospital in Nana Peth after a 20 year old woman died in the hospital on Monday afternoon. The mob consisted of about ten people. These people pelted stones at the hospital and caused a lot of damage to the Out Patient department (OPD).
The mob had attacked the hospital because they believed that the woman had died because of medical negligence. The total loss to the 15-bedded hospital has been estimated to about Rs 50,000. The director of the hospital, Amol Devalekar lodged a complaint against these people at the Samarth police station.
According to Bhimarao Gajare, the police sub-inspector of Samarth police station, the name of the deceased woman was Priyanka Randive. She was brought to the hospital at around 10:30 pm on Sunday by her relatives. When the doctors examined her, they referred her to some other hospital. She was immediately taken to the Sassoon Hospital where she was declared dead as soon as they arrived. Gajare said, “On Monday around 1:00 pm, during the funeral of the girl, some people attacked the Hope Hospital. They ransacked the OPD and threw stones at the windows of the hospital. ”
Devalekar recalls that the woman was in critical condition when she was brought in their hospital. He was examined by his assistant, who advised her relatives to take her to Sassoon Hospital as they could not treat her. By the time they reached Sassoon Hospital Randive had died. Devalekar said that the deceased was not a regular patient at the hospital and, “We were not aware of her medical history There is no question of medical negligence from our side. I do not know why our hospital was targeted.”
A police compliant has been filed against the suspects who attacked the hospital. Priyanka Randive had recently been married and her relatives have not been questioned by the police. Several police personnel have been deployed outside the Hope Hospital.
