His father discovered that Avri has music in his soul, at the early age of 4 and that was when Avri first picked up an Rekorder fluet. Performing since 1965, at the tender age of 7, he found his talent in the saxophone. Anyone who has heard him on the sax, would agree that Avri had a fierce passion in him for his music. He started out playing Jazz Saxophone and moved onto the piano. By the age of 19, he was chosen to travel to the US to perform. When he got back to Israel, he had made his country proud.
In April 1976, Avri joined the Israeli Army and went to war. Nothing could stop him from playing his music. A year later, the government sent him to seven European countries to entice the Jewish people to come back home and live in Israel. He had to serve in the army for a minimum of 3 years, and in his final year he started teaching children to play the flute, saxophone and keyboard. After he finished his service he started performing again. As a musician, he was inspired by the Beatles and Elvis Presley. He went on to perform with top musicians in Israel.
Avri moved to Pune in 2004, with his wife and kids. She was born and brought up here. Initially the rest of them found it difficult to adapt to life here. Being foreigners, they were faced with a lot of prejudice. That didn’t make them change their minds, they waited it out and slowly adapted to their new lives.
The principal of Bishops (in 2005), encouraged Avri to put on a Israeli performance for their Annual programme. This led to other schools welcoming him as a music teacher. As a jazz musician in Pune, Avri found his way to Shisha Café, “Prithvi was the one who helped me connect with the musicians here, and I owe him tons of thanks!” he wrote in a mail to me. “Soon after I met Medhi, and I am extremely grateful to him also” he adds.
Avri was a regular performer at the Taj, Blue Diamond, Corinthians and Sun-n-Sand hotel for the last few years. He has also recorded for a few Bollywood tracks and collaborated with some artists locally.
Summing up his experience living here he wrote, “It was very tough, discouraging and disappointing – the way people “welcomed” me. But now it is much better. The sky is clear and we keep walking on that yellow brick road. I hope the future brings is more and more musical programmes, because as I’ve said for the past 46 years, Music is in our Soul!”
Avri Moscovich, succumbed to a heart attack on the 23rd of April, 2010. His family, friends, fellow musicians and students will pay their final respects and say goodbye to a dear friend.
His fierce passion for life was clearly apparent in the way he said ‘hello’ and with a heavy heart, I dedicate these lines to a man who pushed the limits of comfort to create fierce tasteful music with a passion.
