The incessant rains in the city caused flooding in the low lying areas. The heavy showers led to the swelling of the Khadakwasla dam and the authorities had to open the gates of the dam into the Mutha river. Many localities situated near the river bank were flooded because of the water being discharged. The traffic in the city was also affected and moved at a very slow pace. The reports from the neighboring Satara district revealed that the heavy showers caused the Koyna dam to overflow and about 50,000 cusecs of water had to be released.

Till Sunday, the rainfall in the city measured about 143.7, which is more than the average rainfall for Pune for the month of June. The average rainfall for June is 116.1mm, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The monsoon covered various parts of Maharashtra on Sunday. The IMD predicted that the many parts of the state, including Pune, will witness more rainfall in the next few days.

The heavy showers caused the Mutha River to rise as a result, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had to rescue several residents from Ananadnagar on Sinhagad Road. Many areas in Vitthalwadi were also affected because of the rains. The head of the disaster management cell had to shift many residents of Shamsunder Society to a safe place. The head of the cell said, “Some roads in Tadiwala slums and Pulachiwadi were under water. We have identified 39 spots. They are under close observation and our teams are on alert for rescue operations.”

He also said that alert citizens can contact the disaster management cell on 25501130 or 9689931511. He gave assurance to people saying that “We will ensure that immediate help is provided to citizens.”

The Tilak Bridge was closed by the authorities when they saw that the Mutha River rose to an alarming level. It was opened only after the water level abated. The people residing at the river banks had to vacate their homes on Monday, following the rise in the water levels of the Mutha River. The mechanics and the small food joint owners also vacated the place owing to rising water level.

Although the authorities made many announcements about the rising of the river level, the people claim that they were completely unaware that the Mutha River had swollen and can overflow. They said that the water levels in societies rose to as high as two feet. While some residents had to evacuate their parking lots, some had to evacuate their homes. However, all of them are now waiting for the rain waters to recede and for their lives to come back to normal.
