City is facing the problem of dog bites from past two years, which is rising rapidly. According to data from the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Health Department’s statistics, there are over 8,570 people who have been bitten by dogs till last month.
N D Thakur of PMC’s animal birth control department said that the department is understaffed that they need strengthen it with more vehicles. He further added that, they had caught stray dogs as per the order of high court and sent them to NGO for sterilization. After sterilization they used to release them in the same area. He also said that, they are not being able to sterilize many dogs as per need.
Currently, the department is having three dog catching vans and 14 employees. He added that the department has sent a proposal for seeking additional staff and four new vans to ward off the dog bite in the city.
The officials of Blue Cross Society of Pune, who work with the PMC for sterilizing dogs, have demanded for better equipment for catching dogs. They also added that they are facing shortage of staff members that may be responsible for increasing cases of dog bite.
According to the civic official, the appointment of the staff and organization of new vehicles at the Zonal ward office level under the plan of decentralize the dog catching department is still on cards.
