Hundreds of niche areas for research and studies are emerging rapidly and this has opened up great prospects for partnership between the Indian Universities and those in the United Kingdom (UK), thinks Mr. Graham Snape, the advisor to the UK Trade and Investment (UKTI). He made a presentation on “Building Links with UK Higher Education” on Wednesday.
“Niche areas such as crowd management and security control; sports and psychology and heritage studies offered by the UK universities have several interesting parallels with what is happening in India,” said Snape.
The British Deputy High Commissioner’s trade office in Pune and the Maratha Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) jointly organized the event on Wednesday.
Snape made a 30 minute power point presentation during which he stressed on the finer aspects of higher education system in the UK. It was quite an exhaustive kind of presentation which also emphasized on the issues to be taken into consideration by the Indian Universities and higher education institutions (HEIs) so that they could approach a long sustaining partnership.
Snape said, “A clear mind vis-a-vis what an Indian university or HEI wants to achieve from the partnership, what could be the funding pattern for such tie-up and quality control are three critical issues for building firm linkages.”
He said, “Universities in the UK are ultra sensitive to anything that might adversely impact their grading, which eventually determines the extent of funding by the government. As such, partnership initiatives are subjected to close scrutiny at multiple levels to ensure that the overall result of such tie-up does not affect their standing.”
There are as many as 115 universities and 165 HEIs in the UK. 99 % of them are founded by the British Government. The Quality Assessment Exercise is carried out once every four years and is a conscious and comprehensive endeavor to maintain the quality of the higher education. It is carried out at different levels as far as tie ups in research activities are concerned, told Snape.
In the UK the Higher Education Funding Council for England caters to the financial needs of the educational institutes. Moreover, the corporate funding seems to be an emerging source in research in specified areas.
The areas getting the focus of funding these days in UK are like Biotech, Biosciences, Science and Technology, Physical Science, Engineering, Medical, Art and Humanities and Natural Environment. However, there are many niche areas where tie ups are possible between the two countries, thinks Snape.
Suhasini Kirloskar, Director of British Trade Office in Pune was also present on the occasion. She said, “Greater linkages in higher education between UK and India can help address several key challenges like access to education and managing quality, which are faced in India.”
Mr. Spencer Mahoney from UKTI said, “The linkages sought after by the UK universities go beyond mere student recruitment. Our interest is also in the universities supporting businesses by closely working with them in various areas of research as is currently happening in the UK”.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
