Pune Police was forced to set up a special squad to cut back the sudden rise in chain-snatching crimes, with 11 gold chains worth Rs 5.34 lakh being robbed in last 18 hours, in different parts of the city. “The special squad that we have formed will be headed by Inspector Ram Jadhav of the anti-dacoity squad. The squad will have a team of 15 trained personnel and they will primarily focus on bringing a check on the rising incidents of chain-snatching crimes,” said Deputy Commissioner of police (crime) Anant Rokade. On Sunday, an alarming six incidents of snatching were reported in Pune, of which five took place between 9.30 pm and 10 pm. And the crime trail continued on Monday, with suspects targeting citizens who were on their morning walks, and managing to steal four gold chains in three incidents between 6.15 am and 7 am.
Out of all the seven incidents, the police have managed to detect only two with the help of alert citizens. Five persons, including a couple, have been arrested by the city sleuths. PuenSite shall give you the detailed description of the different chain-snatching incidents that took place in the city to make people aware on the modus operandi of the criminals.
The first incident took place around 12 pm at Aranyeshwar area of Sahakarnagar on Sunday, wherein two suspects on motorcycle daringly snatched Kothrud resident Rekha Pravin Yenpure’s (25) gold chain worth Rs 60,000. Yenpure and her husband in display of immense courage and presence of mind alerted the people on the road and chased the suspects. The people and the policemen on patrolling duty acted swiftly and nabbed the duo on Pune-Satara road near Swargate. The suspects have been identified as Deepak Navnath Shitole (24) of Bibvewadi and Vijay Chandmal Jain (26) of Dhankawdi. Assistant police inspector Shashikant Khot of Sahakarnagar police station informed the media that the suspects were produced before the court and have been sent to the police custody till April 13. “Investigations have found out that Jain is into the business of building material supply. We are investigating whether the duo was involved in any other similar incidents or not,” Khot said.
Another incident took place around 9.30 pm on the busy Fergusson College (FC) Road in which a couple and their co-conspirators snatched the gold chain to the tune of Rs 50,000 from a 19-year-old student Pratik Wangikar, who stays in a hostel located on FC road. However, alert citizens on the road again showed courage and managed to nab the trio and finally handed them over to the Deccan Gymkhana police station. The snatchers have been identified as Mayur Sanjay Waghmare (28) and his wife Shanta (27), both residents of Ganesh Peth, and Bharat Ramesh Pawar (19) of Shivajinagar.
Prabhkar Patil, Assistant commissioner of police (crime) informed that the suspects were involved in chain-snatching incidents for quite some time now and have been using different mode of operation every single time. “On Sunday when Wangikar was chatting with his friend, Waghmare came near him and out of nowhere hugged him. In the meantime, Pawar snatched his chain and started to run away,” Patil said. Wangikar caught hold of Pawar after a brief chase, and when in deep sea, Shanta alleged Wangikar of trying to molest her. “They were all accusing each other, but when they were brought to the police station, the suspects confessed their involvement in the crime. We have recovered the chain,” Patil went on to say.
But the incidents didn’t seem to rest in the city that is slowly earning the sobriquet chain-snatching capital of India. Hardly half an hour had passed since the above incident took place; suspects snatched two more gold chains including one worth Rs 1 lakh in a separate incident near S P College area. The issue came into light when Parvati Jadhav (42) of Shanivar Peth and Swati Avinash Saradkar (44) of Gokhalenagar lodged a complaint with the Khadak police station. In another incident, suspects managed to snatch a gold chain worth Rs 30,000 of Suvarna Rajendra Zad (41) at Guruwar Peth and fled away. A case was later registered with the Vishrambaug police station. Within a gap of five more minutes, complaints were lodged by Vaishali Gaikwad (38) of Bhosari of another chain being snatched worth Rs 45,000 at Shivajinagar.
The worst part is that criminals have gained in confidence and are indulging in criminal activities in the broad daylight. On Monday morning, three citizens were taking their usual morning walks when chain snatchers attacked them. Nirmala Mohan Date (78) got robbed to the tune of Rs 24,000 at around 6.15 am by suspects at Mukundnagar. Miscreants also snatched two gold chains worth Rs 1.60 lakh of Uttam Narayan Barate (60) near Sarasbaug. Around 7 am in the morning, Bharati Uday Dandekar (52) of Phatakbaug was also robbed of her gold chain worth Rs 65,000.
“The incidents have risen quite alarmingly and we are trying to find out whether the crimes are organized or are separate incidents. We are also talking help of the traffic police to bring down the criminals. All police stations across Pune are sending messages appealing people to remain alert. We are nabbing people on the police list and have increased patrolling and developed new junctions for nakabandi operations,” said DCP Rokade.
“Chain-snatching incidents have been rising every passing day and it is really not possible for us to go out in the open without fear. I hope that the concerned officials manage to punish the suspects and bring an end to this alarming development,” said Shikha Mehta, a resident of Kothrud.
