Pune saw some unexpected spell of rains during the last few days, which left people perplexed. Well, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said that the cloudy and rainy weather conditions prevalent in the city are the result of cyclonic storm Jal. The cloud cover also led to a sudden steep rise in the minimum temperature level, which on Tuesday was recorded as 22.2 °C, a considerable 8 degrees above normal. IMD officials also cautioned that these pro-rainfall conditions are likely to remain for the next few days as well.
Jal, the cyclonic storm that was formed near Chennai on Sunday, caused heavy downpours down South, including Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Although it has now relatively weakened, it has caused a deep depression. Officials believe that this depression will prevail for a couple of days more and heavy showers are expected in Maharashtra, Goa and Konkan.
As per IMD’s Tuesday’s daily report, on Monday, around 11.30am, the depression over Rayalaseema weakened and moved westwards into well-marked low pressure areas in Karnataka and South Central Maharashtra–Goa coasts.
“People should not be perplexed at all. Such weather conditions are quite normal around this time of the year. Formation of cyclonic storms is a known phenomenon in the post-monsoon season,” said Medha Khole, director (weather forecasting), IMD.
But there are some Puneites who instead of complaining rather enjoyed the untimely rains. “It rained during Diwali and I simply loved the weather and the smell of freshness in the air. It added to the overall euphoric mood of festivity. Rains are always beautiful. I think the weather in Pune right now is superb and I hope it continues to rain for the next few days as well,” said Remuna Singh, a resident of Hadapsar.
