Jejuri is one of the famous pilgrimage centers in Maharashtra. It is known all over the world as the holy shrine of Lord Khandoba who is the deity of many families in India. Jejuri has always been the source of inspiration and spiritual exaltation for many. Theists believe that this place is hallowed by the divine presence of Lord Khandoba and hence serves as the powerhouse for them.

Where is it located?
The city of Jejuri is located in the district of Pune in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It lies in the South East of Pune towards Phaltan. It is just 51 km away from the city of Pune and so one can easily plan a one day trip to this holy place of pilgrimage.
Historical Highlights:
The place Jejuri proclaims its own importance in the history of Maharashtra. Mughal King Aurangzeb intended to destroy the temple of Khandoba in 1690. However, it proved to be the futile effort. It is said the Mughal army was marching forth destroying the important Hindu temples in Maharashtra. The army reached Jejuri with an intention of creating havoc all around but unintentionally disturbed a beehive. Bees in turn attacked the army and the Mughals could not help but to leave Jejuri.
In yet another historical highlight, the place is known for the famous meeting of the father and the son. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj met his father Shahajiraje Bhosale after a long period here in Jejuri. It is said that they had an important discussion on the war strategies to be adopted in their revolt against the Mughals.
The Temple:
Khandoba: the Deity of Dhangars
Jejuri ensures its place among the list of the most famous temples in India. It is popularly known as “Khandobachi Jejuri”. Among the deities of Hindus, Khandoba is regarded as the god of Sakambhakti i.e. the deity who comes to fulfill all the desires of His devotees.
Oodles of devotees keep coming to this beautiful temple of Mhalsakant or Malhari Martand throughout the year. Mhalsakant or Khandoba is the deity of the Dhangar (Shepherd) community in Maharashtra.
Picturesque Aerial View:
The temple is built on a small hill and so can be seen from the roads below. One has to have a grueling climb up of 200 steps; but the picturesque aerial view of the entire Jejuri makes you forget all your exhaustion.
Simple still Beautiful
The Khandoba temple is pretty simple from the architectural point of view; but still it looks beautiful from any angle. There are two major parts into which the temple can be divided: Mandap i.e. the porch and Gabhara i.e. the sanctum. The idols in the sanctum have a mesmerizing effect on you.
The Idols
The idol of Lord Khandoba is a sheer beauty. He has been shown carrying various weapons like sword, damru and paral which is an assurance that the deity will always come and protect His devotees in any danger. The other idols here include Goddess Mhalsa and Manimalla which too are pretty.
Deepmalas
Among the other turn ons in the premises of the temple, the huge Deepmalas i.e. stone structures that serve as stands for keeping oil lamps. When all the burning lamps are placed in the niches of the Deepmala, the view is awesome.
Yatra
The Yatra is organized here in Jejuri four times every year. These are the grand occasions in Jejuri when thousands of Khandoba devotees flock here. “Yelkot Yelkot Jai Malhar” is the popular term here. The reverberations of this term pervade the surroundings of Jejuri at the time of the fair. Moreover, the sword competition held here on the day of Dussehra is yet another attraction.
Dive Ghat:
On your way to Jejuri, Dive Ghat is yet another tourist attraction worth visiting.
All in all a trip to Jejuri is a pleasure. It’s not just the spiritual satisfaction that you get from this trip but the natural beauty of the area too helps you rejuvenate your tired city souls and weary minds.
