Lohgad in Pune

A perfect destination for treks and picnics, Lohagad holds its own significance in the history of Maharashtra. You can easily reach here by train. You can merrily plan a one day trip to this beautiful fort and experience the grandeur of the place. A sage called Lomesh had stayed on this fort for meditation and so the fort is named after him. One of the main forts of the Satwaahan Empire, Lohagad stands as a testimony to the glory of the past.

The fort lies 3400 ft high above the sea level and is widely spread in the side range of the Sahyadri Mountains. It’s a 7 km journey southwards of the Malavali, a station on the Pune- Mumbai railway line. Another fort called Visapur lies in the eastern side of Lohagad. You can reach Lohagad through a village called Lohagadwadi. The 4 huge entrances to the fort proclaim the excellence of the architects and craftsmen. These four doors are known as Narayan Darwaaja, Ganesh Darwaaja, Hanuman Darwaaja and Maha Darwaaja respectively.

In 1489, the Nizamshahi took hold of Lohagad fort. It remained with them till 1630 and then went in the hands of Adilshah. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj conquered the fort in 1648 and appointed Netaji Palkar as the caretaker of the fort and the surrounding region.

It was Nana Phadnis, the main executive authority in the Peshwa Regime in Maharashtra, who built several structures on Lohagad as a part of the renovations. These include a step well and a big polygonal tank with 16 sides. A small Shiva temple here and the grave of some Muslim saints are yet another spots to visit.

Though being quite an old construction, most of the fortification of the fort is still intact. As you come in through the Ganesh Darwaaja, an inscription on the rectangular stone can be seen. It gives some information regarding the construction of the fort under the supervision of Nana Phadnis. As the fort was built for keeping an eye on the Korbaarse Maval, Nane Maval and Andhra Maval, special massive galleries for guards can be seen. You also find a couple of go downs between the Narayan and hanuman Darwaaja. They were used for storage purposes.

In the western part of the fort you can see a 1500 m long and 30 m long part of the mountain looking from a distance like a scorpion’s sting. That’s why it is called “Vinchu Katta”. This part was used for the inspection of the region.

During the rains the moss clad bastion of the fort looks like a nobleman wearing armor.
Lohagad makes one of the most happening places for a trek. You can arrange a trip here at any time of the year; but rainy season is undoubtedly the best time. Away from the common din of life, spend some time in the company of greenery and scenery.
