After getting a considerable, eight acres of land sanctioned by the Irrigation Department for the proposed Cancer hospital, the Pimpri-Chichwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has come up with yet another project – an Eye Bank – the first of the busy commercial twin-township. This much-needed facility is to be set up at Aditya Birla Hospital in association with the Rotary Club. The civic body will have an administrative proposal ready before the standing committee meeting next Tuesday.
Three months back, Municipal Commissioner, Asheesh Sharma said that his administration looked forward to setting up an eye bank in the area before the end of this fiscal year. The team seems to have kept their word. The imminent realization of the proposal has created a wave of excitement in the area.
The civic chief said, in a press conference, that the idea of setting up an eye bank was mooted by the Rotary Club a few months ago. He also accented the importance of such a facility in Pimpri-Chinchwad and need to speed things up. The proposed eye bank has tentatively been named PCMC-Aditya Jyot. The initial investment for the establishment will come from the Municipal Commission and later on, the Aditya Birla Hospital authorities will manage the eye bank single handedly. The bank will be fully equipped with advanced technology in the field of Opthalmology.
With the announcement of this proposal, eye specialists in the area have sighed in relief. At present, due to the lack of any such facility nearby, the rate of eye donations in Pimpri-Chinchwad is poor. The rare donor has to move all the way to Pune to get formalities done. “There is only one donor a month whereas at least five are waiting to receive a cornea,” says Dr. Uma Pardhi, an eye-specialist from YCM Hospital.
She, along with many other eye specialists, are of the opinion that the setting up of PCMC-Aditya Jyot will definitely help creating awareness regarding eye donation and eye care among the people.
