The first Sheetal bus, an innovative Pune to Mumbai bus service launched by Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) was flagged off from Mumbai Central on Monday by state transport minister Radhakrishnan Vikhe Patil. Sheetal will be 20 minutes faster and cheap by Rs 70 than Deccan Queen, which is considered the best train service between Mumbai and Pune.
“This is a first-of-its-kind AC semi-luxury bus with air suspension technology. It has got an attractive look with plush interiors and offers great value for money,” said Deepak Kapoor, managing director of MSRTC while addressing the media in a press conference. “The bus fare of Sheetal is Rs 180 and the service is basically aimed to create a new market, so that common man can afford an AC bus to Pune or Mumbai,” Kapoor went on to say.
The ticket rate of Shivneri AC Volvo, also a venture of MSRTC is Rs 250 on the same route. However, Kapoor assured that the launch of Sheetal buses would not affect the business of Volvo services. “Volvo buses cater to a different market all together. These buses are bigger, extra-premium and have push-back seats. They have a regular and dedicated set of passengers, and so there’s no reason for a dent to be caused in the Volvo segment with this launch,” Kapoor added.
The seating capacity of a Sheetal bus is 39 and it will run from Dadar to Pune via Aundh Parihar Chowk from 10.30 am and 6.30 pm from Dadar, and 6.30 am and 2.30 pm from Pune. Plans are to introduce twenty more buses by next month, with an additional few plying between Pune and Nashik.
MSRTC also has plans to hike bus fares by at least 3-5% within a week. The government is also considering waiving off the toll for MSRTC buses, which provides concessions to handicapped, students and others to the tune of Rs 600 crores annually.
