National Film Archives Museum in Pune

The National Film Archives Museum in Pune which is a living heritage of Indian Cinema is one of the major film archives in Asia. It was established in 1964 and has the largest collection of movies in Asia. The National Film Archives Museum is one of the brilliant ways to make Indian cinema more popular globally. The museum is visited by many photographers, researchers, biographers, students, film directors and producers from across the various parts of the globe.

Location:
The National Film Archives Museum is located in Jayakar Bunglow on Law College road. The Jayakar Bunglow is named after Mukund Ramrao Jaykar, the first Vice Chancellor of Pune and the first Vice Chancellor of the Pune University. The building of the museum is exquisitely designed in the pattern of old British architecture. There are big shelves in the museum that contain books, magazines and pamphlets on films.

Architectural description:
The old building was housed in small sheds with some make-shift vaults. There were later developments also. The National Film Archives Museum opened a new building complex in 1993. This building has 3 basement vaults that can hold sixty-thousand film reels. This new building is centrally air-conditioned. With these recent developments, the National Film Archives Museum has become one of the largest and renowned film archives in the world.

Collection:
This museum has an incredible collection of film journals, photographs, scripts, wall-posters, folders, records and audio tapes. It is also enriched with all the classical movies of the world and details regarding those movies. It collects award-winning films, popular films like Box-office hits, off-beat and critically acclaimed movies, films which are shown in International Film Festivals, films which are the literary adaptations of famous works, documentaries, books written on classic and path-breaking movies, different genres of film-making etc. Books, pamphlets and periodicals discussing Indian and World Cinema also do find their way to the National Film Archives Museum in Pune.

The collection of the museum goes on increasing every year. At present it has 14,678 books related to film and film industry, 14,264 scripts of various films and 10,304 films. With the release of more and more intellectual and path-breaking movies, the museum is also enriching itself with volumes of those movies.

Organizational structure:
Although the National film archives museum was first established in Pune, it has widened its branches. In the present day, there are 3 Regional offices of NFAI at Bangalore, Thiruvanantapuram and Kolkata.
The organizational structure of National Film Archives Museum in Pune is divided into 4 categories like:

  • Head of the Organization (The Director)
  • Film Library Section (Film Library Officer)
  • Film Preservation Section (Film Preservation officer)
  • Administration section (Administrative officer)

Aim:
The aim of the National Film Archives Museum is to help students who do research on cinema and things related with films like directions, acting, film history, film theories and others. It promotes film culture and makes the Indian Cinema globally more acceptable. National Film Archives Museum also organizes screening of rare classical movies.

How to get there:
The National Film Archives Museum is situated at Law College road, which is almost at the center of Pune City. You can take a city bus from Pune Railway Station to Deccan. From Deccan you can reach The National Film Archives Museum on Law College Road via Prabhat Road. Otherwise you can hire an auto from any part of the city.
