The figures speaks for itself and going by them, the present condition does not looks progressive and with rain gods not ready to give in easily, chances are of more people to fall for the disease.

However, on the brighter side, the state government has decided to seek technical support and expertise form the central union government to tackle malaria.

“It is true that the state government has sought the Union government’s intervention in the form of technical support and expertise to curb malaria cases.”

Maharashtra health minister Mr. Suresh Shetty was quoted as saying on the confirmation of the reported news.

“Compared to the deaths last year, there has been little success in reducing the mortality rate in Maharashtra. The state health department has sought the Center’s intervention in curbing the increasing malaria cases and deaths in Greater Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra.”

A total of 31 people died in the state due to malaria last year. Pune district reportedly witnessed one such death in January and more recently four people became the victims of the infection in June-July this year only.

The malarial situation in the state is said to become serious in the wake of a health report submitted regarding the same.

According to the very report, the year 2008-09 saw 166 deaths while 2007-08 was a witness to 176 such casualties.

“The components of the national malaria control strategy include the use of long lasting insecticide bed nets, application of indoor residual spraying, early diagnosis of malaria and treatment with effective anti-malarial, management of the environment, forecasting, prevention, early action and control of epidemics, improved monitoring and surveillance systems and evaluation of program implementation,”

All said and done, let’s hope for the techniques being harbored by the state government to be installed in its correct format and more lives may be saved too.
