Until and unless we protect ourselves, how can we protect citizens?

slammed special police prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam to the city police. He was speaking at a private function in Pimpri on Sunday. He said that the city police is tackling with terror in a very lazy manner and has converted police commssionerate into a virtual fortress. He warned the city police saying these steps can send a wrong signal to common people as police is responsible for their lives.

The Pune police have secured themselves against terror threat. The police commissionerate has been converted into a fortress. But they should be protecting the citizens and not themselves… It has become difficult for citizens to approach the police

Nikam said.

However, he refused to say anything on the remark he made, but later on he retracted his comments saying that “I think it’s not appropriate to make such comments by staying in the same system. The police may not like it.”
Thought the Nikam has retracted his comments, he made them public- the point people had been emphasizing ever since the police built a fence around the commissonarate office and kept an eye on those passing by.

Despite Nikam having taken back his statement, city police have angrily reacted to what he said.

If Nikam has said this, my simple question to him is: Until and unless we protect ourselves, how can we protect citizens,” said Ravindra Sengaonkar, deputy commissioner of police (special branch).

While talking on Headley’s role in the Mumbai attacks (26/11), Nikam said that there is a just a possibility of his being involved in the attack.

If he had a role to play in the Mumbai attack, the FBI would have filed a complaint against him.”
Nikam informed that the trial for Mumbai attack is about to over soon and then the final verdict will come out. “We hope the verdict of the special court will be out in three months. Kasab then has a chance to appeal to the higher court.”
Nikam said that the trial was very significant as whatever clues we have direct us to come to the point which suggests the Pakistan’s hand in it. “The world is following the Kasab trial closely. We will submit all details of the case to the US and Pakistan governments.

He also talked about the security in five-start hotels suggesting that all five star hotels should have CCTV cameras set all over the hotel.

The CCTV control should be at a secret and secured place. This will help in tackling any attack.
