In an earnest attempt of shunning away the misconceptions regarding snakes, a Raigad- based nature study group called Nisarga Giribhraman has started a novel study on the reptile. The study aims at establishing whether snakes possess homing instincts or otherwise which will go on for the next three years or so.
The president of the group Mr. Ganesh Mehendale addressed a press conference on Friday. He said, “We have got the study topic approved by the Principal Chief Conservator of Maharashtra Forests. We now are waiting for the State Government to grant us the final permission so that we can start off with this study on the behavioral patterns of snakes.
In an interesting information regarding snakes, Mr. Mehendale said, “Ever increasing deforestation and urbanization over the years have destroyed snake habitats and made different species of this reptile adapt themselves to the urban conditions. Moreover, rodents and lizards found in plenty in many city houses on which snakes thrive provide them with favorable conditions for growth. Over the last decade, we have rescued thousands of snakes from human dwellings and translocated them in the wild. Many of these snakes are found to have returned to the same location, and have to be rescued again. Now, questions that logically arise are: Whether the current methods and objectives of rescuing snakes adopted by snake lovers are appropriate; whether these snakes survive in the wild or not. There is also a niggling doubt in one’s mind: Are snakes, contrary to popular perception, territorial? If they are found to be, it will lead to a whole new set of questions, including that of human-snake co-existence, not to forget a rethink over the current rescue methods,”
The Nisarga Bhraman group comprises fifteen experienced members. The team every day receives more than a call to take the snakes out of the human dwellings and translocate in the wild. Thus the group has to rescue over 400 snakes a year. The team members have taken the training of catching the snakes and handling them with care.
The very first thing to be taught to the trainees is of course to get over the fear factor. Volunteers who are willing to participate in the rescue operation are given an opportunity to touch the rescued snakes and that too without inviting a snake bite. Trainees are also trained in identifying different species and making a distinction between venomous and non venomous snakes.
Mr. Mehendale further said in the press conference, “”Basically, we employ a special snake stick and a racquet like structure with a basket instead of net attached to it. Once we catch the snake, it is eased into the basket, and subsequently released in the wild. Before we do that, we note down specific details about that particular species; its unique identification marks, number of scales and so on. This has helped us discover that many a time, the same snake finds its way back into the same home.”
Mr. Mehendale was happy to note that the group could convince the need of the study to the panel of experts appointed for giving approval to the same. No such study on the homing instincts of snakes has been undertaken so far on the Indian soil though a few studies abroad had pointed at such instincts. The study is likely to find out many interesting facts in the snake world.
