PCMC Gives the Mantra: Recycle and Reuse

Waste water thrown out of the purification plant in Nigdi being used for gardening which is indeed a note worthy act of Pimpri-chinchwas Munical Corporation(PCMC). The civic body wants to make optimum use of the water resources available to the twin-township. The PCMC has decided to make sure that water generated as waste through the purification plant is not sent to the drainage system.

PCMC : Waste water Recycle and Reuse for gardeningThe nearby gardens including the Durga Devi Hill garden are getting ample water for gardening due to this decision. Around 3.5 million liters of water is being supplied to these gardens every day.

Mr. Pravin Tupe, joint city engineer, PCMC, talking to correspondents yesterday said that water on this planet is the elixir of life. Water management is the keyword today. Every drop of water should be well utilized and even the waste water should not be considered useless and thrown away. Mr. Tupe was happy to note that the PCMC has set an example before all by the drastic steps taken as regards the water management. He also said that this act of the PCMC should get a positive response from the citizens and thus the problem of scarcity of water especially during summer could be overcome.

Every day 380 million liters of water is taken from Ravet and then sent for purification in the plant at Nigdi. After purification whatever quantity of water is left as residue is just backwash water which carries lots of mud and hence is not potable. Forty filter beds containing sand have been set here for further filtration.

During this filtration the mud particles get stuck between the sand. The mud stuck in the filtration beds must be cleaned regularly otherwise there are chances that it fills gaps between the sand particles and may bring the purification process to a standstill. That is why these beds are cleaned after every three days.

Mr. B.N. Gaikwad , garden superintendent, PCMC told correspondents that water coming out from the purification plants is used in gardening Durgadevi Tekdi Garden. We are getting good results as large quantity of potable water is saved in this entire procedure and plants in the gardens too get regular water. “Lush green gardens are giving us the feeling of consummation”, he added.

Same attempt to utilize waste water fruitfully is being made by the Pune Municipal Corporation as well. The civic body is preparing out a plan to recycle backwash water generated in the Parvati Water Works.  As per the official information, around 35 million liters of water would be recycled every day and then used for various purposes. However this project will take some time to start.
