Phule Wada in Pune is one such place sanctified by the serene presence of a leading visionary reformer in Indian history Mahatma Phule. The Wada was his residence and hence holds its own importance in Indian history.
Where is it located?
Phule Wada stands in the Ganj Peth area, a few kilometers away from the Pune Station. This is the place where Mahatma Jyotirao Phule stayed with his wife Savitribai Phule for some time. The site is as old as 1852.
Mahatma Phule devoted all his life to the sole aim of eradicating all the evils of society. He tried for the welfare of the downtrodden and the suppressed classes of the society. His most noteworthy contribution to the society is his efforts for the education and the empowerment of women.
Phule Wada has now been converted into a museum where the visitors can get some idea of the legendary career of this great reformer.
As you enter inside the Wada, you see a well which is immensely important from the historical point of view. This is the well which Mahatma Phule opened for the backward downtrodden classes of society who were not allowed to use water from the public reservoirs in the village. This is regarded as Phule’s great contribution to liberation movement of the dalits in Maharashtra.
Visitors bow down before the half statue of Jyotirao in the courtyard. There is ample open space around. This is the place where Phule addressed small meetings of the Satyashodhak Samaj. The construction of the Wada is quite simple. It’s a good example of the architecture and lifestyle of the 19th century.
No entry fee is charged to the visitors here.
