In a bid to clear extra traffic in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has given a green signal to begin the construction work at Goodluck Chowk at Deccan Gymkhana in the city.
The notice, issued by the PMC’s additional city engineer Shrinivas Bonala states that there are certain reasons as to why the subway needs to be constructed at the proposed location in the city. This has come out following the survey carried out by the city civic body.
When talked about the upcoming subway whether or not it will benefit most of the local residents and shopkeepers,Bonala said that it will help to add more chaos at Goodluck Chowk.
In the same statement issued by Bonala, the PMC has denied that the construction was not started suddenly; rather it was started considering the commuter’s need in mind. They said that the funds for this project were allocated from the last three consecutive civic budgets.
The subway project has also been mentioned in the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), which was widely discussed with various organizations, citizens’ groups and the traffic police
the statement says.
The PMC officials claim that it is necessary to construct the subway at the Goddluck Cwock considering the huge number of commuters of about 1,310 crossing every hour at the spot. According to some commuters, the subway is not required since Fergusson College road has been made one way, answering to this; Bonala said that there is a need to make a subway to Goodluck Chowk.
He said,
Though the ways have been changed and made one way, the genuine problem of commuters crossing the road remains the same. Therefore I believe that it is necessary to construct the subway there.
