This is something that would give some relief to the railway passengers who often meet the auto rickshaw drivers asking for exorbitant fares at the Pune railway station. The pre-paid auto rickshaw system will be relaunched at the station within a month.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Manoj Patil was talking to the correspondents on Tuesday. He said that the railways have given the permission to start the pre-paid fare system. “The details of the scheme are being finalized,” he added.
Most passengers who arrive at the railway station and find auto rickshaws to reach their destination have the bitter experience of exchange of hot words with the rickshaw drivers. Many a time rickshaw drivers refuse to ply according to the meter and, instead, ask for a lump sum amount as the fare, which is indeed exorbitant. The Pune City Traffic Police Branch has been receiving a number of complaints regarding such excessive fares demanded by auto rickshaw drivers. For those who are new to the city rickshaw travel is indeed a nightmare.
In the pre-paid fare system, the traffic authorities predetermine the fares on various routes which are based on distance. Charges for luggage, night travel and some incentive for the auto rickshaw driver which are nominal, too, could be added in the pre-paid fare. The system may take a little extra fare from the passenger but certainly not an exorbitant amount. The fare would be collected at the pre-paid booth at the railway station and the passenger as well as the rickshaw driver will get a receipt signed by the traffic branch authorities. The registration number of the auto rickshaw and the travel route and travel time of the vehicle will be mentioned on the receipt. The passenger would have to sign on the receipt before leaving the rickshaw. The driver is supposed to return this receipt to the traffic branch authorities.
The system is not new for Pune. Pre-paid fare booths had been set up at eight stands, including Pune and Shivaji Nagar railway stations some eight years back. Many of the advantages of the system including the passenger safety made the citizens appreciate the initiative. But the system was discontinued later for the reasons best known to the City Traffic Brach authorities.
Mr. Manoj Patil said that pre-paid system will also be started at a few other places like Shivajinagar station and Swargate bus terminus. Police commissioner Meera Borwankar asked the concerned authorities to launch the system at the earliest.
