Property tax in the city to increase

tax-puneThe Pune Municipal Corporation has proposed that the property tax in the city be increased to get more revenues. But the decision taken by the PMC is being opposed as many corporatores from the city have come forward to rescue the residents who are questioning the legality of the move.

According to Mumbai Provincial Act, 1949, people who stay in and around the corporation area get around 40 percent of discount on the property they own using it for their personal use. The only condition to avail of this rebate is that the property should not be rented out to any one else. And what’s more, the owners are also entitled to get 15 percent of discount on the maintenance of their property.

The PMC commissioner has tabled on this proposal before the standing committee to cancel all such discounts given to the residents mentioned in the MPA of 1949 so that the PMC can get more benefits and can raise its revenue income.

If this proposal gets the green signal, it will affect at least four lakh property owners in the city.
One of the corporatores against the move is, Ujjwal Keskar of the BJP. He said

These discounts are given by the PMC and the People of Pune have a right to avail them and nobody can stop them from doing so. The PMC officials do not understand the law and have hence proposed such an idea.

Along with the corporators opposing this move, Nagri Hakka Samiti’s Kaka Kularni has also opposed the move and has criticized the decision.

The survey in the city for property was taken in 1983. PMC shouldn’t forget what is important first and should carry out the survey. If the body finds out the exact number of properties in the city, then there will be no need to take away these concessions.
