[...] However, Pune is also famous for its numerous schools that impart quality education right from the basic level. Schools in Pune India Pune has some of the oldest schools in the country that teach in English as well as the regional languages. There are convent-run, government-aided and private schools that provide different curriculum like ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education), CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) and SSC Board (Maharashtra State Board). The Bishops is one of the oldest schools in the country and was established in 1864 by the British rule. Pune was then a cantonment of the British Indian army and Bishops was established for the children of the officers in the army. It is also one of the few schools in the city to have a boarding facility for its students. Yet another school that has a long history is the J. N. Petit Technical High School. Unlike most other schools, J. N. Petit is known for encouraging its students in sports and boasts of very good track record in cricket and football. Also, it provides technical education to students from eighth grade. Two other names that have dedicatedly served the purpose of education since the pre-independence days are Hutchings School and New English School. Hutchings was established in 1879 while the New English School began in 1880. The New English School began with a view of imparting national education in a colonial India. It was founded by some of the most illustrious freedom fighters namely Lokmanya Tilak, Gopal Ganesh Agarkar, Vishnu Krishna Chiplunkar and Mahadev Namjoshi. Pune also enjoys the honour of having the first girls’ school in India established by Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and his wife Savitribai Phule in 1848. It was dedicated for empowering girls with education. During those days, the orthodox society did not allow education for girls and hence this step by Mahatma and Savitribai Phule was revolutionary. Apart from these legendary schools, some of the other prominent names in Pune city include St. Mary’s, St. Joseph’s, St. Vincent’s, Abhinava High School, Dr. Kalmadi Shamrao High School, Symbiosis High School, Ahilyadevi High School and Renuka Swaroop. The legacy of these historic schools continues even today. Today, there are many new establishments that have adopted several new techniques to impart education.
