Remarkably, three students from Pune have been selected for the Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science (IRIS) which is a prestigious national-level fair. It has happened after a gap of two years that anyone from the city has been selected for the event. Now, the students are up on their toes and busy working diligently on the science projects that are to be presented at the national fair. The students that have been selected are the members of the Exciting Science Group (ESG) which is a voluntary effort of the eminent scientists of the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL). The projects of the students that are going to be a part of IRIS will be first monitored by the ESG scientists.
The three students are Jayakrishnan Vijaymohan from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Sarthak Chandra from Vikhe Patil Memorial School and Deepti Gnanaseelan from St Helena’s School. The three are busy on their respective innovative projects that are to be displayed at the national exhibition in Mumbai which is going to be a three day event from November 18 to 21.
In order to congratulate the students on their achievement and encourage other students to follow the same path the NCL felicitated the three on Tuesday at the hands of Milon Nag, chairman, Confederation of Indian Industries, Maharashtra zonal council.
Jayakrishnan is working on a project that will observe the change in carbon dioxide when leaves extract chlorophyll. Sarthak is working on the changes in quantitative measurement of water after it dissolves a particular substance. Beetroot extraction and metal indicators are what Deepti is working on. All the three projects are going to be useful in day to day lives and contribute to the field of research.
The students participate in the popular science talk conducted by ESG every month. K Guruswamy, co-ordinator, ESG, said, “The objective of ESG is to excite school students about science and technology. We are trying to create an interface between students and practising researchers.”
The ESG invites eminent scientists working in the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, as well at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research. ESG conducts workshops dealing with different scientific experiments and demonstrations, Slide shows and videos on the relevant topics too are shown to the students. Scholars are invited to deliver lectures on various topics every month.
These programmes are not restricted only to the science organizations. Students from the schools run by the PMC, the Valley View School in Kondhwa and Jawahar Navoday Vidyalay too are included in these activities.
