Pune is the epicenter of fatal road accidents in the country. The accidental death rate for Pune is 89.4%, the highest in the country. The rising number of fatalities needs immediate attention from the policy makers to the commuters. A study carried out by the –revealed that Nearly 3 people die in road accidents in Pune every day.
The rising number of vehicles on the roads, poor and inefficient public transport are the prime reasons. The other factors contributing to the chaos on the streets are the ill- designed roads and unmanned traffic signals. Drunken driving is a serious threat to the safety of commuters and pedestrians.
The peth areas witness the maximum number of minor road accidents in Pune. These roads were designed about 300 years ago catering to the then desired requirements. Today about 25 lakh vehicles ply on these roads serving about 50 lakh people. The many by-lanes also add the misery of the citizens.
Youngsters derive a sense of thrill and satisfaction with speedy bikes. What they fail to understand is that they not only are endangering their lives but the lives of other commuters as well. Most of the license holders are completely unaware of traffic norms and take the law enforcers for granted. The rising per capita income, reduced prices of automobiles have added to the number of vehicles. Increased vehicular density coupled with inadequate, disorganised infrastructure has increased the number of road accidents in Pune.
The public transport system in the city is in an appalling condition. Failure of the BRTS has left the citizens hopeless. Inefficient, disorganised services have earned them a bad reputation. The buses are in an abysmal state. Their numbers are not in proportion with the population and hence a new fleet of buses catering to the newly developed suburbs is urgently needed.
Unless we establish non motorised and public transport as the main mobility pillars, the nuisance will multiply. Further each individual should take up responsibility for himself and discourage defaulters. Obedient and duteous commuters should be rewarded to encourage others to follow. One such initiative is the roadstar campaign started by Mr. Ajay Agrawal, where the drivers are rewarded for following traffic rules. The volunteers appreciate their sincerity and a free insurance ticket is issued. It not only encourages but a personal obligation is made to continue the practise. Our own efforts will reduce the accidents on Pune roads.
