A statue in Pune has created a political stir, after more than 30 members of the Shiv Sena were detained for protesting against its removal. A statue of Dadoji Kondadev, who is hailed as the ‘guru’ of Chhatrapati Shivaji, was removed from Pune’s Lal Mahal and placed in a municipal garden near to the Pune Municipal Corporation office.
The Maratha community in the city got extremely offended by the incident, and they said that an ignorant section of historians have misinterpreted Dadoji Kondadev as the teacher of Shivaji.
Congress–NCP coalition governs the Corporation currently, and they plan to install a statue of Shivaji’s father, Shahaji Maharaj. In protest, the Sena has called for a bandh on Tuesday, December 28, 2010.
Lal Mahal is in the heart of Pune, and it was the childhood home of Shivaji and currently it has statues of young Shivaji and his mother, Jijabai.
