Miss. Meera Borwankar took up the reins as the first lady police commissioner for Pune on Thursday. She replaced Dr. Satyapal Singh whose sudden transfer hit the headlines in no time. Singh was embrangled in his alleged conflicts with Mr. Ramesh Bagwe, minister of state for Home. It is said that this confrontation has led to Singh’s overnight transfer as chief of the State Police Establishment Wing.
Miss Borwankar who was working as the Special Inspector General for CID Crime Branch is happy to get promoted as Pune Police Commissioner. She was talking to the journalists in a press conference yesterday. She has come up with her own plans for the eradication of terrorism and corruption in the city.
Miss Borwankar underlined the fact that many a time the cases of mental and physical torture of women are not reported to the police. She emphasized on the need of such cases being reported. She also called terrorism as the biggest challenge before her. Miss. Borwankar has proved her mettle as a highly efficient police officer in the past. She wished to keep up the same track record while working as the Police Commissioner for Pune.
Answering to a question Miss Borwankar said, “There is no need to feel amazed to see a lady on the post of a Police Commissioner. It’s a proven fact that a woman can handle any stress as efficiently as a man.” Showing full faith in the officers of the police department she said, “We are ready to combat terrorism and will smother any sort of criminal activity.” Taking stock of the illegal practices in the city and then deciding the strategy accordingly is going to be her topmost priority, she asserted.
Before handing over the reins to Miss. Borwankar, Dr. Satyapal Singh, too, addressed the press conference. He expressed his deep satisfaction with his two year stint and refuted the news reports saying his transfer to be the upshot of the increase in the crime rate in Pune. When asked if the transfer has any connection with the alleged ongoing conflict with the state minister, Dr. Singh refused and did not offer any comment. “Let bygones be bygones” was his stand. “Now I don’t have any issues with anyone and have accepted my transfer as a change in the role,” said he.
He also extended his best wishes to Miss. Meera Borwankar for a successful stint.
