Predominantly an instrument used for Hindustani Classical music, the sitar is a stringed instrument. It is also played in Bengal and Pakistan mainly. The Sitar was introduced to popular music by Pt. Ravi Shankar who played on tracks like Norwegian Wood by the Beatles and then went on to teach George Harrison to play the instrument.

Hindustani Classical musicians almost always are backed by a sitar.
